Improve brain memory, magnesium L-threonate has been approved by the European Union as a new food!
In October 2024, the European Commission authorized AIDP's magnesium L-threonate to be placed on the market as a novel food and revised Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/2470.

Magnesium L-threonate becomes a new food
According to the European Commission announcement, the chemical name of magnesium L-threonate is magnesium (2R,3S)-2,3,4-trihydroxybutyrate monohydrate, and its common name is magnesium L-threonate. This new type of food is produced using chemical synthesis methods. It appears as white powder and has a maximum consumption of 250 mg/day. This supplement is intended for adults (excluding pregnant and breastfeeding women).

The European Commission states that magnesium L-threonate should be considered a source of magnesium, bringing more bioavailable options to magnesium supplements. The Food Safety Administration evaluated the safety of L-magnesium threonate new food based on rat bioavailability studies, in vitro bacterial recovery mutation tests, in vivo micronucleus tests, and randomized placebo-controlled human studies. The results showed that L-threonate magnesium Magnesium sugarate is a source of magnesium with established safety and bioavailability when added to food supplements for nutritional purposes.
Magnesium L-threonate, higher absorption and retention
Magnesium L-threonate, higher absorption and retention
Magnesium (Mg) is the second most abundant mineral in cells and is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymatic reactions. Therefore, magnesium is also an essential nutrient for various metabolic functions in the body. It plays an important role in cellular energy production, protein production, and genes. It plays an important role in regulating, maintaining the normal function of bones and teeth. Magnesium can not only activate the activities of various enzymes in the body, but also regulate nerve function, maintain the stability of nucleic acid structures, regulate body temperature, affect people's emotions, and participate in almost all metabolic processes of the human body.
Magnesium is abundant in the food supply and is found in grains, cereals and dark leafy foods such as spinach and cabbage.
The most common added ingredients in magnesium supplements include magnesium glycinate, magnesium L-threonate, magnesium malate, magnesium taurate, magnesium oxide, magnesium chloride/magnesium lactate, magnesium citrate, magnesium sulfate, etc. Among them, magnesium L-threonate is a magnesium compound with high bioavailability.

In 2010, MIT scientists published an article in the journal Neuron, reporting that they had discovered a magnesium compound called L-magnesium threonate (Magtein®), which can effectively convert magnesium into delivered to brain cells. Research shows that magnesium L-threonate is better absorbed and retained compared to other sources of magnesium, such as chloride, citrate, glycinate, and gluconate.
Magnesium L-threonate benefits
As a new bioavailable magnesium compound, magnesium L-threonate is increasingly becoming known for its potential to improve cognitive function and enhance memory. Numerous studies have shown that magnesium L-threonate can effectively transport magnesium into neuronal cells across the blood-brain barrier, thereby enhancing neuroplasticity, improving memory and cognitive abilities, and reducing anxiety and stress.
Enhanced memory
In rodent model, studies have found that after one month of magnesium L-threonate supplementation, magnesium concentrations in the brains of young and old rats increased, and memory and learning abilities were significantly improved. Magnesium L-threonate also improved memory recovery in aged rats. Magnesium L-threonate supplementation does not affect body weight, exercise capacity, or water and food intake. The mechanism of action of magnesium L-threonate on cognitive function may be through activation of NMDA receptors, which increases synaptic density and improves memory.
Another experiment found that long-term oral administration of magnesium L-threonate can prevent and restore short-term memory (STM) and hippocampal long-term potentiation (LTP) deficits in hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapses caused by neurological injury (SNI). Furthermore, prophylactic long-term oral administration of magnesium L-threonate blocks the upregulation of TNF-α in the hippocampus, which has been shown to be critical for memory deficits. Oral administration of magnesium L-threonate may be a simple and effective way to improve memory deficits.
Improved sleep quality
One study found that subjects who supplemented with magnesium L-threonate experienced improved sleep quality, as well as improved mental clarity and physical activity during the day. It’s worth noting that the sleep benefits of magnesium L-threonate are more about improving deep sleep quality and mental alertness upon waking than helping people fall asleep faster.
Improved cognition
Hypoxia inhibits the entry of glutamate, a major brain neurotransmitter closely related to cognitive function, into brain cells, and the initial cellular response to cortical hypoxia is dependent on glutamate. Magnesium L-threonate increases magnesium ion concentrations in the brain and improves cognitive function. Studies have found that magnesium L-threonate can regulate the expression of glutamate transporter EAAT4, and has a positive effect on neuron survival and reducing cerebral infarction in zebrafish after hypoxia.
